New Homework Spelling Activities

How Words Sounds

Syllables - Write out each of your list words.
Clap out the syllables in each word.
Place a line/s in the word where there are syllables.

For Example  - pres/en/ta/tion
Tip: Rule for Syllables - Each syllable should have a vowel sound. 



How Words Look

1.  For each word count how many vowels and consonants it has and how many letters in total it has; Make a list showing your words.
  For example: shadow: 2 vowels and 4 consonants. 6 letters in total cartoon: 3 vowels and 4 consonants. 7 letters in total 2.  Ask someone to test your spelling with a look, cover, say, check test.



How Words Change Form 

1. Carefully trace around the outline of each of your words.
2. Circle any prefixes or suffixes in each of your words. 


 


Where words come from

For each word write one or two words the means the same (synonym) or a short sentence (in your own words) explaining the meaning of the word. 
Tip: Listen to Mr. T's use or meaning of the word in the Word List recordings on Audio Boo.   

For Example:
peacefulness - very calm
colourful - has lots of different colours

1. Sound out each of your words. Record yourself saying them in Photo Booth.

2. Use all of your words. Use the rhyming dictionary to find 2 similar sounding words for each of the words. Make sure you know the meaning of the rhyming words that you are using.

Complete these tasks in your spelling homework book.

1.  For each word count how many vowels and consonants it has and how many letters in total it has; Make a list showing your words.
For example:

3.  Underline the tricky parts of each of the words.

4.  Ask someone to test your spelling with a look, cover, say, check test.

1.  Find small words within any/all of your words. Make a list of these with the main word and the small words next to it. Be sure to go through all your words.

2.  Change your list words to Plurals (more than one). Make sure they are words that can be changed into plurals. Make a list of the main word and the plural next to it. Remember the main words must be a noun. 

(Plural rules: Words ending with y – change the y into i and add es
Words that end in sh, ch, x,  ss, s, z – just add es
Change words ending in f to v and add es)

1. Use the Etymological Dictionary for each word to find out:

a. Where 5 of your word comes from (Greek, Latin, German. Choose 5 words that are interesting to you.

b. What do each of these 5 words means.

2. If any of your words have root words (geo, tele, photo)
make a Root Word Web. You can check if any of your words have root words from the website link.
